The Rainy Halloween
The faceless man outside hasn’t moved.
He’s been there, standing, for hours.
All the trick-or-treaters walk around him,
And he likewise ignores them.
I was too afraid to look away.
Even in the rain he still stands unmoving.
Standing blankly somehow made it feel worse,
If he was clearly something I could name my fear.
He wasn’t aggressive,
He wasn’t crazed,
He wasn’t angered,
And he wasn’t bloody,
He only stood there, motionless.
My lights were shut off.
Undeterred by the lack of lights a kid came my way.
He got up to the door then got called away.
He ran back to his mom and continued on their path.
When I looked back, I became more scared than ever.
He was gone.
